If You Want to Work in Tech, Learn to Question It

Read about how you can ask the right questions in your next tech interview.

There is strong emphasis on technical execution in the industry. “Can you code this?” “Can you optimize this process for our users?”

This approach makes sense, as tech roles require analytical skills and efficiency under pressure.

However, this culture also encourages moving directly to solutions, and here’s where you come in. In an industry driven by speed, you might be hesitant to question systems and processes in fear it will be misread as hesitation, even when your questions are essential.

What are systems trained on? What happens when your idea scales to millions of users? These are critical questions, not afterthoughts, and they shape design from the very start. If questions aren’t asked, the consequences are technical, social and ethical all at once.

Building Your Tech Expertise Where To Start

Questioning tech never means rejecting innovation. Quite the opposite, in fact—it means engaging with it deeply. Bringing real-world awareness and critical questions to your interview demonstrates curiosity beyond tech itself, and allows the interviewer to see how you can help shape their company.

In these environments, great questioning skills look like this:

  • Interrogating assumptions about the norm: Why are we solving this problem in this way and what have we done in the past to support our current decisions?
  • System-wide thinking: If you are building something from scratch or working collaboratively on a small-scale project, how will this platform or idea behave at scale? Who is affected in the long run?
  • The ability to anticipate impact: Where has your information come from and who controls it moving forward? Tech is as much about the systems , as it is about the people involved.

How Questions Make You Stand Out in a Tech Interview

Most of us have faced the highly anticipated stage at the end of the interview where you’re asked “do you have any questions for us?” Employers notice when candidates switch the pace and ask clarifying and insightful questions throughout the process. Questions like these help hiring managers to evaluate how you think.

Scenario: You’ve reached the final interview stage and you’re presented with the task of solving an obstacle. Strong candidates ask:

  • When did the challenge begin?
  • What constraints matter most?
  • What risks should we consider?
  • What is the timeframe?

Experiences like WIRED Summer Program emphasize and train your skills in curiosity and confidence. You’re not just learning how tech works but examining how it shapes the world and how you can apply better judgement, analysis and responsibility across key tech innovations.

In a future defined by AI and automation, the next generation of innovators are the ones who work on ideas that are well thought out. Ideas people actually trust. The ability to question may matter as much as your ability to solve the big issues.
